Prof. Gunho Sohn has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant for his research program “Embodied Spatial Intelligence for Autonomous Infrastructure Monitoring.” The five-year grant provides $260,000 ($52,000 per year) from 2026 to 2031.
The program will advance embodied spatial intelligence – AI systems that perceive, reason about, and act within physical space – for the autonomous monitoring of critical infrastructure. Building on the lab’s strengths in neural computer vision, robotic perception, and autonomous mapping, the research aims to enable intelligent systems that can inspect and understand infrastructure environments with minimal human intervention.
The NSERC Discovery Grants Program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals, and this award incorporates the enhanced funding committed in the 2024 Federal Budget to strengthen support for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
