abstract = {A LiDAR-assisted panoramic visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system for a mobile mapping system (MMS) is presented in this paper. The feasibility research on the SLAM for MMS with a panoramic camera and a tilted LiDAR without GPS/IMU sparked our interest. Because of the significant disparity in spatial sensing coverage, we show that employing a panoramic camera as a primary sensor for SLAM is more suitable than using a tilted LiDAR in this particular sensor combination. Existing panoramic visual SLAM systems, on the other hand, produce up-to-scale results, making them inappropriate for many applications that require metrically-scaled results. We develop a panoramic visual SLAM system that uses LiDAR points to generate metrically-scaled outputs to address this constraint. First, the suggested SLAM system augments visual features with ranges generated from LiDAR points. Following that, the visual features are fed into the SLAM pipeline, which performs tracking, local mapping, and loop closing. Finally, the scale information in the ranges augmented to visual features is integrated into the SLAM pipeline via the production of metrically-scaled map points, eventually leading to metrically-scaled SLAM results. Extensive testing in challenging outdoor conditions has proven the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed SLAM system.},

abstract = {In this paper, we present a novel smoothing approach for ultra-wideband (UWB) aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) positioning. Existing works based on smoothing or filtering estimate 3D position of UAV by updating a solution for each single 1D low-dimensional UWB range measurement. However, a low-dimensional single range measurement merely acts as a weak constraint in a solution space for UAV position estimation, and thus it can often lead to incorrect estimation in unfavorable conditions. Inspired by the idea that the multilateration outcome can be utilized as a measurement providing a strong constraint, we utilize two types of UWB-based measurements: (i) each single 1D range as a high-rate measurement with a weak constraint, and (ii) multilateration outcome as a low-rate measurement with a strong constraint. We propose an incremental smoothing-based method that seamlessly integrates these two types of UWB-based measurements and inertial measurement into a unified factor graph framework. Through experiments under a variety of scenarios, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.},

abstract = {Precise positioning of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is critical to conduct many sophisticated civil and military applications in challenging environments. Many of the-state-of-the-art positioning methods rely on active range sensors. Among many available ranging sensors, Ultra-wideband (UWB) can provide many benefits such as high precision, power efficiency, and not prone to multipath propagation and noise. Thus, the UWB has recently been attracting many interests from the research community as a complementary positioning sensor. However, there is a significant lack of UWB benchmark data available to support developing, testing and generalizing their own positioning methods using UWB sensors. In this paper, we present a unique benchmark dataset that provides UWB and IMU signals acquired by a Q-Drone system in a diverse environment, including an indoor, open field, close to buildings, underneath the bridge, and semi-open tunnel, as shown in Fig.1. This benchmark also provides ground truth of UAV positions independently measured with robotic total stations. In this paper, we present the characteristics of the UWB benchmark dataset, Q-Drone UAV platform and the results of the quality assessment conducted by a baseline positioning algorithm implemented with multilateration principal and non-linear optimization.},

abstract = {This study introduces a traffic flow theory-based reliability indicator to evaluate the inter-city public transit service. The two-fluid theory parameter n that measures the road networks’ resilience to changing traffic is used as a new reliability indicator of public bus service. We compared the performance of the new indicator with the three existing reliability indicators, including on-time performance, with a total of 52 different GO Bus routes to ascertain the usability of the new indicator. The GO Bus service is an inter-city bus service operated by Metrolinx in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas in Ontario, Canada. We used 1 month of GO Bus GPS data collected in July 2017 to estimate various public transit reliability indictors. We also investigated the relationship between reliability indicators and selected roadway network characteristics, such as route length, freeway ratio, intersection density along a route, and so forth. The study applied a series of statistical analyses, including principal component analysis, correlation analysis, and z-test using Fisher’s z transformation. The results showed that the proposed two-fluid indicator n can be used as a supplementary reliability indicator for assessing road networks’ resilience in regards to changing traffic flow conditions. The new indicator provided additional insights for inter-city bus service operators for initiating communication with roadway governing agencies for the purpose of improving road networks to further improve public transit service reliability.},

abstract = {In recent years, many mega-cities have provided 3D photorealistic virtual models, a digital replica of the geometrical structures of cities, for more effective decision support in public safety, urban planning, and engineering applications. Most research attempts at reconstructing geometric models of cities treat such urban systems as if they are in a static environment. However, cities are dynamic systems that continuously change over time. Accordingly, their virtual representations need to be regularly updated in a timely manner to allow for accurate analysis. The concept of progressive city modelling is to continuously reconstruct city models by accommodating changes recognized in the spatio-temporal domain, while preserving unchanged structures. This paper proposes a novel fusion method to progressively refine building rooftop models over time by integrating multi-sensor data. The proposed method integrates the line modelling cues of existing rooftop models produced by airborne laser scanning data with the new ones extracted from optical imagery. This modelling cue integration process is developed to progressively rectify geometric errors based on Hypothesize and Test optimization using Minimum Description Length. A stochastic method, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, coupled with simulated annealing, is employed to generate model hypotheses and perform a global optimization for finding the best solution. This fusion method is designed to offset the limitations of respective sensors and thus rectify various modelling errors (shape deformation, boundary displacement, and orientation errors) that are often involved in rooftop building models. The performance evaluation tested over the ISPRS show the proposed modelling method can achieve the improvements of 1.8%, 0.54°, 0.33 m, and 0.007 for the quality, orientation difference, Hausdorff distance, and turning function distance, respectively, compared with initial building models. In addition, the proposed methods show the highest performance in the quality measure among the state of the art methods, while demonstrates competitive performance in the completeness and correctness measures.},

abstract = {The DeepGlobe Building Extraction Challenge poses the problem of localizing all building polygons in the given satellite images. We can create polygons using an existing instance segmentation algorithm based on Mask R-CNN. However, polygons produced from instance segmentation have irregular shapes, which are far different from real building footprint boundaries and therefore cannot be directly applied to many cartographic and engineering applications. Hence, we present a method combining Mask R-CNN with building boundary regularization. Through the experiments, we find that the proposed method and Mask R-CNN achieve almost equivalent performance in terms of accuracy and completeness. However, compared to Mask R-CNN, our method produces better regularized polygons which are beneficial in many applications.},
