We are delighted to share that Prof. Gunho Sohn has been awarded a $1.65-million grant from NSERC’s Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program to develop and lead Smart Mobility Advanced Research & Training (SMART) – one of only 16 projects funded across Canada in this competition, announced on July 9, 2025.
Over the next six years, SMART will train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in AI-powered, connected, and sustainable mobility systems, with a strong emphasis on equity and community impact. The program is grounded in two Living Labs – at York University’s Keele Campus and at Opaskwayak Cree Nation – where trainees will co-develop real-world mobility solutions to improve health, access, and food security. SMART also includes an internship and exchange program with industry, government, and community partners across Canada and internationally.
Prof. Sohn, founding director of York’s Mobility Innovation Centre (MOVE), will direct the program and lead its digital twin mobility research, integrating real-time sensing, AI, and simulation to support responsive, inclusive, and data-informed transportation systems.
